The author does a great job of pulling everything together in a satisfying ending. While it leaves me wanting to know what happens next, it did a great job of wrapping up the story with a bow. My favorite part, without giving it away, is revealing what Dominica and her tribe had been working towards, and how far they'd come. But, some great reveals on the war front too. Really engaging book with some terrific characters in it. I hope in next book, we hear more about the seeress and find out more about what Cassie and William are working towards together. read less

Mostly I probably would run around screaming my head off. This story kept me intertwined with its witty wordplay and intriguing plot. Sure, I've seen and read other stories about characters getting caught in games but this one was fun because it didn't belittle the female character. Most stories dealing with games set in medieval or elvish settings have the ladies as damsels in distress. Not this one. This one the heroine kicked butt and that's what I found refreshing.Looking forward to the next one in this series. read less

The characters are unusual, some very attractive but others grossly off putting, no matter which side they are playing on. Meanwhile, a mysterious off world group works to gain an unknown outcome. As the stakes go up, suspicion rises that this is more than just a game. But who is pulling the strings? And why?The author skillfully drew me into her world, leaving me eager to pursue the next installment. read less

Intro to a well-constructed fantasy/sci-fi world of magic and strife I very much enjoyed this book. It has some really iconic characters whose personalities shine through. Mostly, though, it's a standard fantasy novel wherein a regular guy from Earth is transported to another world to help win the fight for the good guys. Along the way, our gender-bending hero meets and befriends all manner of strange denizens, who I won't describe so as not to ruin your fun.If you enjoy a smart fantasy about military tactics, magic and complex characters, get this book! I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.(full disclosure - I was asked to review a preview copy of this book, but I received no financial or material rewards for doing so.) read less

In the past, it seemed more like William was the kinda guy who sits around in fancy clothes looking good, being nice/graceful, and making requests. In other words, "the princess is in another castle." Now he's in it with Gilraen, as he should be. While Gilraen and William get over as more interesting, our villain Becksworth hasn't come much further than being Benedict Arnold. He's the same baddy he was in book one. The main takeaway from book 3 is that the heat is on. The large scale and one-on-one conflicts are on full display with all the race/creatures we've come to know like the Elves, Trolls, Krelli, Dwarves, Orcs in on the action now against Beckworth's forces (with the Adjudicars, Caierne, and Thandekre). It's incredible that Gilraen had the charisma enough to inspire them all to take a stand. A lot of book 3 reads like one big battle, and it feels like a lot of the more minor characters and groups of characters get to play a part. You also get to see more battle tactics and strategy from the different sides, mainly the protagonists and their allies. All the talk of strategy gets a little excessive though as it drags a bit. While the conflict was boiling in the previous installment, it seems to have caught fire and spread to the adjoining apartments, triggering the sprinkler system to go off. This is far and away the most action-packed and interesting book in the series, especially since we finally get to see some heavy stakes near the end.The only thing about book 3 that's inferior to the other installments is the cover as it becomes very clear that Gilraen's head does not match the position of the body as it did in books one and two. It also falls into the phenomenon of the "uncanny valley" in which her head and face seem too real for her body and the background. But those are just some thoughts.Shockingly, just when we thought this series was winding down, we're actually encouraged to read more in the series thanks to this ending!Overall, this is such an ambitious and imaginative series! It's hard not to applaud all of the author's great work! read less

But "fish out of water" stories, like Quantum Leap where the hero(ine) has to adapt to what others see and believe about them -- their appearance, capabilities, and place in the world -- are special to me. So, one of the things I enjoyed most about this book was the discrepancy between the game character and the gamer -- the occasional insertion of the character's self awareness versus his awareness of the very different character he was inhabiting. This is a complex world -- but also a game -- and the potential for finding other gamers hiding behind other characters in the game is fun and intriguing. Playing out of prophesies is also a trope I enjoy, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this spins out in the next volume. read less

Excellent! Excellent read that will keep you wondering what is happening!

Great imaginative adventure A book filled with military strategy, color, romance, exciting battle scenes, magic and humor. It moves quickly, is sensitive to environmental concerns and is realistic about the horror of war and difficulties of peacemaking.

I couldn't put it down I had to find out what happened immediately, so I stayed up until I finished it.Cleverly written.

Adding more factors into the game with more beasts, monsters, dwarves, and you guessed it; more elves!!!Something that really stood out to me was the detail. The second book in the series stood out for a few reasons to me. For starters the details the author went to describing the strategies of battle. All things considered with the massive amounts of different species living within the story; this is an intense and wonderful feature. One that I found to be memorizing and no doubt not a simple one.I also thoroughly enjoyed watching more character development with Galrean. Not only does the elf get to interact with others of her kind, she also becomes close with a few beasts that is rather adorable!!!Building on an already solid foundation, the second installment in the series left me in awe and looking forward to the next book. Book two most definitely solidified the Prophecy of Gilrean in the chronicles of Jaralii. read less

It's actually a pretty big leap in quality. This might be due to a different editor or the author's natural development as a writer over time. I'd concluded that this series can best be described as "imagination gone wild." The author has so many great and varied ideas that are thrown together in this story like fruit in a blender. I had the privilege of getting a character guide and map from the author after commenting on the over 40+ characters in book one. I stopped writing them all down, partly because I'd given up on keeping track and partly because I now had the character guide to refer to. The conflict in book 2 seems to come to a boil. There's seems to be more large-scale fighting in this book (where as book one featured Gilraen in more a lot of one-on-one conflicts), and Gilraen continues to show that she's a great leader of soldiers and commander of loyalty. This may have been even more effective if she had been portrayed so much as a Rey Skywalker in book one in which she was already able to overcome her trainer, perform spells, use some of the strongest weapons in the whole series (Soul Blades), etc. She also already popular and loved by all at that point, so the love, loyalty, respect she now holds seems more like a cherry on top.One thing that continues to be missed is Tony (the player). He's there, definitely, but we still don't learn too much more about him yet. It continues to feel like a bit of a missed opportunity. Perhaps book three can enlighten us more. Ultimately, this is Gilraen's story, not Tony's, and Gilraen is a compelling enough character in her own right if for no other reason than she always finds ways to overcome obstacles and honor a virtuous moral compass.Book 2 definitely develops the relationship between Gilraen and William more. It also taps in to more of the traveling/adventuring aspect of the series as Gilraen continues her prophesied quest to bring the various races of elves, dwarves, trolls, and more to her side. It also continues the phenomenal world-building which is something that really stands out in this series! read less

So, when a friend approaches him to beta test a new game that promises a “fully immersive experience,” he is quick to sign up. The experience proves more immersive than he could imagine. Transported to an alien world, he takes his place in the court of the handsome Prince William. More startling still, he is now a she. Tony is in the body of a beautiful elf woman, the very image of the Prince’s murdered wife. Tony is now a pawn in a deadly, high stakes game for control of Jaralii. However, her abilities, once trained, could allow the pawn to become a queen.I SawGilraën (Toney Richardson) has taken her place as a warrior/sorceress in the court of Prince William. Prince Beckworth and his alien Adjudicars are on the march. Elves cower in their realms. Dwarfs look to their dwarrows for refuge. Prince William and his brother King Richard are at a severe disadvantage. However, the pawn has been exchanged for a queen, and the queen begins to dominate the board. Gilraën has trained archer-charioteers. She has compelled the army to make better use of sorcerers. Now, she is gathering intelligence and seeking allies.I ConqueredQueen Gilraën has come into her power. She has might armies at her command. She has convinced Elves, Men, Dwarves, Orcs, Giants, and Spiders of the danger of Prince Beckworth and his Adjudicars. Gilraën and her armies converge upon the usurper. However, the fate of Jaralii is far from decided. Can Tony (Queen Gilraën) snatch victory from the jaws of defeat? Will Tony ever go home to reclaim his old life? Does he even want to?Review:Gilraën and the Prophecy is a three-book (or ebook, in this case) set of the Jaralii Chronicles. They are fantasy novels set in the world of Jaralii. Tony Richardson, a computer gamer from our world, is convinced to try a new, immersive experience, and gets more than he bargained for. He is transported to Jaralii to become a new character. He is transformed into an elven warrior/mage. More shocking, he is now a she. Joanne Reid does a wonderful job of world-building and character development. It’s hard not to root for Giraën.Going through the trilogy, the action scenes developed over time. At first, the challenges Giraën had to face seemed too easy. As she moves through the books I Saw and I Conquered, Prince Beckworth and the evil Adjudicars challenge her more significantly. Definitely well worth the read. read less

The descriptions that I noted in my review of book one, Joanne's generous serving of finite details offers the reader an opportunity to enter the story and become a part of the excitement. I have never actually wondered about the thoughts, fears, anxiety of a warrior passing through the gap ripped in the wall of a castle by continuous bombardment with heavy stones hurled by assault devices. I experienced the exciting atmosphere outside the castle prior to opening the wall. The noise, confusion enthusiasm of the attackers actually felt real to me. I could picture myself cautiously entering the opening. I now know what it feels like to be in their situation. The death occurring around them, the loss of a dear friend in the battle. The exultation of realizing you have been victorious, only to find one more really bad guy lurking. This book the culmination of the three book series is the very pinnacle of the exciting drama, only to find that perhaps Joanne has left maybe a tiny opening for a new adventure!!! I look forward to adding a paper copy of "I Conquered" to my bookshelf! NOTE; The author has offered a map of the kingdom showing all of the locations of the battles, skirmishes and victories. If you enjoyed Book 1, "I came" you will definitely love , "I saw"! Being a cat lover, and knowing Joanne's love of cats, I especially enjoyed the segment involving her interplay with the giant cat however I am confident that we will see more of the cat in the coming edition, in which case the segment with the cat was a precursor of future interest. I think my favorite part of the book is when Gilraen defended herself before King Richard putting him in his place. Her quoting of the prophesy which foretold her arrival, and the purpose for which she had been transported from earth, led to her support by the other royalty present. I look forward to adding this book to my shelves when the paper edition is available!! I felt that I would have enjoyed the book much more if I had a map of the kingdom. The author has offered a map, and I would seriously urge that before you finish book 2, you obtain this map showing where the action is, and where the others are supporting the cause. read less

Oh, to be a Highborn Elf! I found the premise of this fine book to be intriguing. Then I got into the book and had a hard time putting it down! I have recommended it to friends.

Compelling storytelling!! Joanne wrote quite a compelling fantasy story! I really felt drawn into the action and the characters in this story! It combines fantastical characters and plots with a logical approach that is often hard to master in this genre. Kudos and well done! Pure enjoyment! Another riveting book in the saga of Jaralii! Starting book three now so I can continue on this journey. Thank you, Joanne for creating this gripping new world! I must conclude with a shrug!

Great ending to an epic adventure Lots of action throughout, wonderfully detailed travels, hurtles, and battles. What an adventure she (he) had! Can't spoil the epilogue, but well worth the reading to the end. This series was a grand adventure!'

Humans, elves, dwarfs, trolls, and others unite for the final push to annihilate him before he can take over the world. Leading the charge is a gorgeous Elf with superpowers who started life as a fat, middle aged man on Earth who was into video games. I already started the next book to see who prevails! read less

For those who love gaming and fantasy... This was an exciting book. I don't typically read RPG related stories, but this took it in an intriguing direction with an entire fantasy world and lots of great characters.

A thorough and honest review of "I Came: Gilraen and the Prophecy" This is definitely a more than decent book. I would give it about a 4.5 stars out of 5. It's competently and passionately written. I would give it about a 4.5 stars out of 5. It's competently and passionately written. It has an interesting and very meta concept. A few things do hold this book back. There are some small and reoccurring errors such as missing punctuations, missing spaces (particularly between single quotation marks), or inconsistencies in things like capitalization ("My Prince" or "my Prince"/"My Lady" or "my Lady") that another editor could've caught. There are also a lot of ellipses (...) used in place of commas, colons, semi-colons, and dashes. The ellipses are supposed to represent a dramatic pause or a character thinking, but sometimes they're used in very straight-forward or not-so-dramatic situations akin to "I went to the armory ... and there were weapons there" (exaggerating there a bit, but you get the point). There are also times when Tony is supposed to be thinking in the body of Gilraen that are represented in italics; however, there are other times when Tony is thinking but there are no italics. There are also something like 40 characters with names in this book. I wrote them all down. Most of these characters are basically NPCs in a video game: people who wander the palace grounds or town doing the same mundane tasks and popping back in every now and then to send the player on a fetch quest. I guess that's fitting with the subject matter (being in a video game). There are some charming and interesting groups of characters such as the women from the palace who tend to and befriend Gilraen and the trio of cats. You never want anything bad to happen to those people. William stands out to me because he's just such a good guy. He's such a good guy that it's kinda hard to believe that he's a 'real' guy. He's almost too good to believe. I almost expect for him to have a Rochester-like dark secret, and maybe he will in books 2 and 3, but I don't know yet. I don't buy him yet.One person I'm dying to know more about is Anthony himself. We don't really get much from him yet. He's like a blank slate. We find out he's old, fat, and a successful gamer. This story leaves a lot of room for discussions of gender since he's a man in a woman's virtual body. Perhaps it'll be explored in greater detail later, but we've gotten breadcrumbs so far.The world does, ultimately, feel lived in. There's a good deal of worldbuilding in this including the special customs different characters and/or their races and/or their clans have, unique foods and drinks, and even unique domesticated or farm animals. Also, each location in the story has its own look and feel to it that's distinct from the others and we can tell where it is in relation to the other places we've read about. I have serious Ultima VII, VIII, IX vibes from some parts of this. For example, there's a continuing idea that Tony's world (Earth) is "next" once the Jeralii lands are conquered similar to how the Guardian in those games would continually threaten the Avatar. There are also some nice touches such as the navigators using the orbital bodies to judge distance and direction. There are many races and clans in this universe including Krell, Trolls, Goblins, Dwarves, multiple kinds of Elves, Humans, Gaunts, Adjudicars, Orcs. There's a lot of political intrigue including divergent motives and agendas to go around. There are also some beautiful and even visceral descriptions in this, many involving similes.I look forward to reading more of this series. I recommend it to everyone into Gamelit and Fantasy! read less
